The Park and Recreation Commission discussed significant shortfalls in the town’s ballfield/diamond maintenance budget and how to collaborate with Needham Baseball & Softball (NBS) to improve field conditions. Current field user fees generate revenue, but approximately 180000 is paid to incumbent contractor Tom Irwin for maintenance, leaving only about 32000 for unexpected safety-related repairs. The department presented multiple options to increase user fees and add an hourly charge with the goal of better funding maintenance and reducing overuse of fields. Commissioners plan to decide on new user fee levels and to allocate roughly 20000 of the remaining maintenance funds specifically toward diamond improvements at their next meeting. This creates a near-term planning window for vendors offering ballfield maintenance, turf/soil renovation, lighting, fencing, safety upgrades, or planning services to help scope and prioritize work as new funds are identified.
